Emotional Healing: Tools that Help me Heal

I’m triggered by loud sounds, the smell of disinfectant, and anybody approaching me from behind. Some days I hide it better than others. “I’m okay,” I say. “I’m fine. I’m healed from my past traumas.” But I call bullshit on myself. Deep down inside me, there is still turmoil that runs amok. The present me is just tired and wants peace, but the teenager in me is rebellious and wants things to be fair and the inner child is afraid and wants love.

You see, I have learned that emotional healing is a process. There are tears, anger, acceptance, self-hate, and so much more, and in no particular order. It may take days, weeks, months, or even decades for healing to take place, whether it was a small or big event or a sequence of them that created your emotional scars. I wrote “Old Self” before I started on my inner self-healing journey. I missed myself. I wasn’t happy, and I knew that if I did not do something about it, I’d continue to live in misery. I longed for things to change.

Old Self

Old self, where are you?
Please come out and play,
Especially on these rainy days. Glow bright like the star,
that brought smiles to those near and far.

Old self, where are you?
Please come back and dance.
Let’s reminisce about those carefree days. Bold and fierce,
that brought such an exuberance of confidence.

Old self, where are you?
Please come out and don’t hide.
Let go of all that heartache and pain. Focus on the happiness and love,
that brought you freedom, my nervous dove.

When I wrote this poem and so many others too, the general theme was that I needed to heal from past issues, as this was holding me back.

What is Emotional Healing?

Emotional healing refers to the process of addressing and resolving emotional wounds, traumas, or distressing experiences. It involves acknowledging and accepting one’s emotions, understanding the root causes of those emotions, and actively working through them to achieve a sense of peace, balance, and well-being. The goal of emotional healing is to cultivate resilience, self-awareness, and a greater capacity to cope with life’s challenges. It’s about nurturing inner strength and restoring a sense of wholeness and vitality to one’s emotional being.

What Has Helped Me Through My Self-Healing Journey

I have used different methods for my healing. I play around with what feels right in the moment. Here are a few things I do:

  1. Poetry. I write poetry because it helps me gather my thoughts. Like healing, the more I edit a poem I am working on, the more truths I uncover. It’s therapeutic in its very nature. Sometimes I have a poem formulated in my mind, and it takes days before I can put it down on paper. There is no right or wrong way. I also love reading poetry. Reading someone’s thoughts on paper that is relatable gives comfort in knowing I am not alone in my feelings.
  2. Journaling. I also journal because sometimes there is just too much on my mind, and writing out my thoughts helps me gain perspective. Sometimes I write before bed or during the day. For me, I don’t like routine, so I write only when the mood strikes. I can write 10 pages in one go or just 2 lines. It doesn’t matter, as long as I give my thoughts acknowledgment, it helps me heal.
  3. Music and dance were 2 things that I had forgotten how much they helped lift my mood. I’ve started using music again. Sometimes Buddha Bar compilations for gentle sounds or Nirvana to take me back to my younger days. Not forgetting Maroon 5 and my dear Alanis Morissette (who, in my mind, sang the soundtracks to my teens and early 20’s). And now when I feel stuck or overwhelmed, I dance to my own rhythms. I forget how underrated and powerful it is for me.
  4. Gratitute. While practicing gratitude, I am always thankful for the great support system I have. I am surrounded by supportive family and friends who provide me with empathy, understanding, and encouragement when I need it most.
  5. Therapy. However, sometimes there are things that we don’t always feel comfortable discussing with friends and family, and we need to seek assistance from more trained individuals. Going to a therapist has allowed me that space to gain an objective perspective that provides me with an understanding of the situation that allows me to heal.

Self-healing isn’t always easy, though, as there are certain aspects that I find harder to follow. For example, I still struggle from time to time with self-care activities and creating healthy boundaries. Being a people-pleaser (for as long as I can remember) makes this so much harder but it’s something I am focusing more on.
