Thriving in Turbulence: A Millennial’s Path to Mental Health and Purpose

Common lines we often tell ourselves include, “I’ll just do it myself,” “I don’t need your help, I’m fine,” or my personal favourite, “I’ll get to it next week.” Sound familiar? If you agree, you’re probably (a millennial) like me, feeling overwhelmed, trying to find your purpose, and generally feeling like you’re caught between two generations, lost and stuck in a routine that brings you no joy.

Thanks to increased mental health awareness, many more people either had or have a therapist and are more open to discussing their issues. But as a millennial, growing up, seeing a therapist wasn’t something we did or even heard much about. We didn’t really know how to feel our feelings. If something happened, you just suck it up and continue with life. “That’s life” we were fed. But somehow “this life” is filled with persistent stress and self-esteem issues.

Rough Times

Collectively, we all have been going through the roughest times. Just this morning, my friend sent me a clip about why we feel we have aged so much in the last five years. It’s due to numerous external factors: the global pandemic, being locked in our homes for months on end, the prices of daily goods rising too high, property prices escalating, fuel prices being ridiculously high, the Russia-Ukraine situation with the spectre of nuclear war, and ongoing genocides. This, layered on top of our own personal issues, explains why so many of us are experiencing burnout, fatigue, anxiety, stress, and more.

My Personal Journey to Healing

A few years back I was in a very unhappy place. My health (both mental and physical) needed so much attention. My instinct kept telling me I wasn’t living my life. I wanted to find my purpose in life. This is what led me to my healing journey. I had questioned myself over and over again about why I was not feeling like myself, why my body was at “dis-ease,” and why I just could not get better. When I started this journey, I thought lets find the solution and all my problems will be solved. But healing continuous. A healing journey is very personal and not something that is like a walk in the park. I keep seeing the message, “Healing is not just loving the best parts of yourself but also letting the worst versions of yourself be loved,” and now I couldn’t agree more. (If you know the origin of this quote, please do share it).

This poem I wrote was at a time when I was yearning to understand why I felt so lost and stuck.

Questioning Quest

How do you expect someone to know you?
When you don’t know yourself.

How do you expect to find the answer?
When you don’t even know the question.

How do you know what path to follow?
When there are so many directions.

How do you expect to be loved?
When you don’t love yourself.

How do you know you are on the right track?
When everything seems to go so wrong.

How do you expect to move on?
When you hold on to the memories so tight.

How are you expected to forgive?
When you carry all that hurt?

How are you expected to feel happy?
When you keep screaming inside.

How are you expected to trust?
When you are so full of self-doubt.

Some of these questions might seem simple, but facing them and accepting the truth has been some of the hardest choices I have ever had to make. Growth has been ongoing and super turbulent, but it has also brought much peace and enlightenment.

If you’re experiencing significant emotional distress, mental health issues, or need to work through past trauma, a therapist is likely the best choice. If you’re looking to achieve specific goals, improve certain areas of your life, or need motivation and accountability, a life coach might be more suitable. (This is where I step in.) In some cases, working with both professionals concurrently can be beneficial, addressing both mental health needs and personal development goals.

Let’s Work Together

If you need someone to walk with you through your journey, I am here for you. It might be worthy to note that although I have a life coaching qualification (from The Academy of Modern Applied Psychology), what I do is based on my experience. I work with you to find manageable and realistic solutions. Methods that I have used, that has proven results, not just for myself but with others too. If you interested or just curious, send me an email, and let’s chat to make your life a better one.

With love and empathy,
Amisha
