Staying Positive in the Healing Journey: Why it’s Hard!

Embarking on a self-healing journey is often a transformative experience, but staying positive throughout can be challenging. Whoever said “your healing journey is not linear” was not joking. So if you too are considering embarking on living life with an improved overall wellbeing, you better buckle up!

The poem below was written during a particularly low point in my journey:

Positivity, Sorry Not Today

Be positive they say
But my eyes are a dead giveaway

Positive thoughts, positive vibes
For I wish for good health
And while my universe lives happily on
A bugged ball of blisters biting my soul
Is how I truly feel.

Positive thoughts, positive vibes
For I wish to be free
And while my universe moves freely by
A caged cat chained to cureless curatives killing my soul
Is how I truly feel.

Positive thoughts, positive vibes
For I wish to be a success
And while my universe is achieving
A sorrowful standstill of spiralling setbacks crushing my soul
Is how I truly feel.

Be positive they say
Sorry, but it’s just not happening today.

If there is anything I have learned over the last few years, it’s that you have to give your emotions the attention they need in that moment. When I ignored them, they had other ways of escaping—ways that I wasn’t particularly fond of. By acknowledging them, my journey felt more real. I found ways to deal with my emotions so that I didn’t dwell on them for too long.

This blog will talk about some of the emotions I have experienced. It’s a brief summary of what I went through and some of the coping mechanisms I used. I hope this will be useful for you too.

Understanding the Emotional Rollercoaster of Healing

First, let’s talk about the emotional rollercoaster of healing. When you dig into your past behaviours and patterns, you gain insights into your life and healing process. These aha moments bring a sense of enlightenment and motivate further healing. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small, like overcoming a fear or breaking a negative habit. It boosts our self-esteem and reinforces the belief that healing is possible.

However, life happens and setbacks are normal. Falling back into old habits or facing new challenges can be discouraging. Setbacks can make you feel frustrated, guilty, and doubtful. Confronting painful emotions and memories can be overwhelming, causing anxiety, depression, or emotional exhaustion.

Self-Healing Tips:

  • Practice mindfulness to stay present with your emotions.
  • Keep a journal to understand your emotional patterns.
  • Develop a support system with trusted individuals.

Staying Grounded and Avoiding Toxic Positivity

Next, balancing positivity with realism is essential. Toxic positivity dismisses negative emotions, leading to feelings of invalidation and shame. Embrace a realistic outlook while maintaining hope. Recognize and validate your struggles and setbacks as natural parts of healing. Addressing challenges constructively rather than ignoring them fosters genuine progress and resilience.

Self-Healing Tips:

  • Practice gratitude to focus on positives without ignoring challenges.
  • Use realistic affirmations that validate your feelings.

The Role of Self-Doubt and Fear in Healing

Third, this journey often brings up deep-seated fears and self-doubt that can obstruct progress and affect positivity. Common fears, such as the fear of failure and the fear of change, start to take over your thoughts. Fear of failure may prevent taking crucial steps towards healing, while fear of change can lead to clinging to familiar, yet harmful, patterns.

Self-doubt further complicates the journey by undermining confidence. It makes you feel that you’re not capable of overcoming your challenges, causing hesitation and inaction.

Self-Healing Tips:

  • Set small, achievable goals to build confidence.
  • Use positive affirmations to counteract self-doubt.
  • Work with a life coach to develop a personalized plan to address fears.

Dealing with External Pressures and Expectations

Fourth, external pressures and expectations can complicate your healing journey. Societal, familial, and peer pressures create stress, making it hard to focus on personal growth. Society’s ideals about success and well-being can lead to feelings of inadequacy, while family and friends may unknowingly impose their own expectations, adding to the emotional burden.

Setting boundaries and communicating your needs clearly is essential. This allows you to protect your mental and emotional space, allowing for authentic healing. Manage others’ expectations by being transparent about your journey. Establishing these boundaries fosters a supportive environment where your healing process can thrive, free from the constraints of external pressures.

Self-Healing Tips:

  • Communicate your boundaries clearly and assertively.
  • Focus on your own needs and progress rather than external opinions.
  • Seek guidance on handling difficult conversations and setting limits.

Adopting a Growth Mindset in Healing

Lastly, adopting a growth mindset enhances positivity and progress. A growth mindset believes in the potential for development and change. The benefits of a growth mindset in the healing process are substantial. It encourages perseverance and adaptability, allowing you to embrace challenges rather than shy away from them. With a growth mindset, you’re more likely to take constructive actions, seek solutions, and maintain a hopeful outlook, even when faced with obstacles. This optimistic and flexible approach helps build lasting positive habits and attitudes, promoting long-term well-being and personal growth.

Self-Healing Tips:

  • Focus on effort and progress rather than perfection.
  • Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
  • Seek feedback and use it constructively.

So in Conclusion
